On January 10, 2025, Indonesia transferred the regulation and supervision of crypto assets from Bappebti (the Commodity Futures Trading Regulatory Agency) to the Financial Services Authority, or OJK. The new framework, POJK No. 27 of 2024, requires crypto businesses to adjust their licensing, governance, reporting, consumer protection, and compliance processes. If you run a crypto trading platform with users in Indonesia, this is what the move means for you.

What the transition changes

Start by finding out exactly what changed for your platform. The legal and compliance teams need to map the new requirements against existing operations, identify gaps, and determine which processes require immediate changes. This can include strengthening KYC procedures, updating internal controls, reviewing licensing requirements, and ensuring documentation is aligned with the new OJK framework.

OJK itself structured the transition around three priorities:

Adapting without alarming users

Users should not learn about new rules from a verification step that appears without warning. Tell them what is changing, why you now need certain information, and how it affects them. That lets you meet the new requirements while keeping their trust and keeping trading running.

Turning new rules into processes

A platform that responds quickly could complete its compliance transition within about three weeks, with enhanced KYC, transparent user communication, and updated internal processes implemented without downtime or significant user loss.

Regulatory change is as much an operations problem as a legal one. Platforms that turn new rules into working business processes quickly can stay compliant without interrupting service to their users.
